MS3 is the turning point of medical school—high pressure, high stakes, and full of opportunity. Students who thrive don’t have superhuman intelligence. They have systems.
1. Build a Pre-Rotation Framework
Before day one, learn:
- Top diagnoses
- Most common presentations
- Basic workups
- Rotation workflow
A 60-minute orientation prep puts you ahead of most students.
2. Know the “3 Questions” Attendings Expect You to Answer
For every patient, be ready to state:
- What is the main problem?
- What is the plan?
- What has changed since yesterday?
This shows clinical growth instantly.
3. Keep a Daily Learning Log
After each shift, write:
- 2 things you learned
- 1 question you want to explore
- 1 skill you improved
Reflection accelerates clinical reasoning.
4. Treat Residents Like Coaches, Not Critics
Residents evaluate you—but they also teach you.
Ask:
“What can I do better tomorrow?”
This question alone raises your evaluations.
